A little extra cash goes a long way, and I love finding new side hustles to supplement our income.
The following are “tried and true” side hustles to bring in some extra cash each month.
RE-SELL GENTLY USED ITEMS
Selling gently used items online is a great way to bring in some extra cash. In my own home, I go through our closets regularly and take out items we no longer use. Honestly, especially in my kid’s closet, I even find items with tags. I recommend going through your own home and getting rid of some of the clutter.
Thrift stores and garage sales are also great places to find items. Many individuals earn a lucrative income re-selling used items online. Whatever your interest, whether it be clothing, accessories, electronics, books, collectibles or toys, you can find something to sell.
Before purchasing items at random, my number one tip is to do your research. Also, be prepared for the fact that your items may sit for a while. Re-selling items online requires patience, until the right buyer comes along.
Check out sites like eBay or Poshmark, two of my favorite selling platforms, and see what items have recently sold. For example, lets say you plan on selling jeans. Take a look at what brands sold, which particular styles and at what price point. Only then should you go shopping with your list in hand. Also, be super picky about the items you buy. Just because the item is “designer”, if it is in poor condition, leave it behind.
Another great thrifting tip is to do an inventory of all the stores in your area. Many stores have special “bargain” days, where you can literally pick up items for pennies on the dollar. Each store has a different system, even within the same chain, so figure out which stores work best for you. Also, ask when your stores gets new merchandise and go on those days. Who knows, you may hit the thrift store jackpot.
COMPLETE ONLINE SURVEYS
Although this one won’t make you rich, survey sites are a valid way to bring in some extra spending cash each month. On average, I will earn an additional $50 to $100 dollars a month completing surveys.
I’ll be honest, completing surveys can get tedious quickly. When my baby is napping, or I have a spare hour, I will take spend some time filling out surveys. This is also something easy to do at the end of the day while catching up on a show.
There are tons of survey sites out there, but by far, my favorite is Vindale. This site has a ton of surveys available each day and actually pays you in cash. Payment is available twice a month, and you can cash out with every $50 dollars you earn.
Other favorites include: Swagbucks and iSay. Both sites work on a point-based system, but points can be redeemed for gift cards and PayPal credit. Remember, there are so many scams out there, so be very cautious about where you give your personal information.
Do your research and make sure the site is credible beforehand. You should never have to pay to join a survey site! These sites are meant to be free for consumers and provide marketing research to interested companies.
BECOME A MYSTERY SHOPPER
Mystery shopping can be a fun way to bring in a few extra bucks each month. My favorite company to use is called The Source. I’ve done mystery shops for grocery stores, electronic stores and even a few of the big box stores. It is so simple! After signing up to be an agent, you can begin to look for “jobs” in your area.
Once you have landed a “job”, you will receive all the information regarding the scenario of your mystery shop. Most often, you are asked to check out the store, interact with employees and possibly purchase some small items. Payment for shops can vary from $5 to $20 dollars, and you are reimbursed a certain amount for items purchased.
There are tons of mystery shop websites out there, but again a word of caution, do your research before signing up. Be wary of sites that are asking you for personal information and requiring you to pay to sign-up.
These are just a few of the side hustles I have personally used for additional income. With a little bit of dedication, you can potentially bring in an extra few hundred dollars each month. Ultimately, “the sky is the limit”.
